Nvidia's Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit: Bringing Sci-Fi Props to Life
Recreating sci-fi props using microelectronics is always cool, but when you can use the combined power of AI and Computer Vision to do it, the results are even cooler. Developer Goran Vuksic has created an impressive pit droid replica using Nvidia’s Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit, showcasing the kit’s potential for more than just AI.
Standing at nearly 4 feet tall, the custom-made replica has an articulated head that can turn, and a webcam for visual input. Inside, the pit droid’s 3D printed body has a cavity that houses the Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit and webcam, meaning it can offer AI processing without being too obtrusive.
Vuksic says he built the droid to share at tech conferences and for fun, and that he uses Nvidia’s Jetson Orin Nano Dev Kit for image recognition with the ability to interact. Jetson enables the droid’s head to turn and respond to objects in real-time, and a webcam enables it to track and look at objects.
Interestingly, Vuksic says he uses Microsoft Azure to train the droid’s object detection capabilities, meaning you don’t necessarily need to use Jetson to power it. You could train it to recognise objects or points of interest, then use other AI tools to enable it to react to them.
