Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster

The Star Wars: Dark Forces remaster is real, because why not? The ‘90s shooter was the first major film tie-in FPS, and successfully captured the essence of that classic Star Wars feel. The original game and its sequel are considered among the best Star Wars games, serving as precursors to the Jedi Knight series. The shooter stood out for its cinematic presentation and use of the Jedi Engine, which allowed for ambitious level design.

This news may disappoint the creators of the Dark Forces source port, released last year, which allowed players to experience the original game on Steam. But it’s a great sign for fans of classic boomer shooters, as Nightdive also announced a remaster of Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion, making it a great week for shooter fans.

The news comes via a Kickstarter update, which confirms that the remaster will release in Q4 2023. While there was previously support for up to 120fps, 4K resolution, and gamepad functionality, Nightdive Studios has since further improved the shooter.

There’s a lot to love about Star Wars: Dark Forces, from its use of the Jedi Engine to its ambitious level design. The shooter was a high point for the ‘90s FPS boom, and paved the way for games like Jedi Knight. It’s a polished version of the game that enhances the original experience with modern upgrades.

If you weren’t around in the ‘90s, or just want to play one of the best Star Wars games, here’s our list of the best Star Wars games.
