The Star Wars timeline

The Star Wars universe is so vast that it’s borderline impossible to keep track of. Sure, the main story is pretty simple – a series of events that led to the downfall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of Darth Vader – but with so many movies and shows in the saga to keep track of, it can be hard to figure out exactly where one thing begins and another ends.

Understanding the Star Wars chronological order

George Lucas created Star Wars with three distinct trilogies and a seemingly endless number of shows exploring the time in between. If you want to watch everything in chronological order, we’re here to help. Our Star Wars chronological order list will help you understand what’s going on and learn more about the characters as the story unfolds. Here’s the order you should watch all of the Star Wars movies and shows in.

Star Wars movies and shows in chronological order

The Jedi Knights protected the galaxy during the High Republic era, which took place before the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of Darth Vader. During this time, the animated series “Young Jedi Adventures” follows a group of Jedi younglings learning from Master Yoda.

The prequels focus on Anakin Skywalker’s journey to becoming Darth Vader, starting with “The Phantom Menace” where the galaxy is at peace. We then follow Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s adventures in “The Clone Wars” movie and series, which fill the gap between “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith,” exploring the galactic war and Ahsoka’s tutelage under Anakin.

“Revenge of the Sith” concludes the prequel trilogy, showing Anakin’s descent to the dark side and the birth of Darth Vader. The first spin-off movie, “Rogue One,” tells the story of the rebels who steal the Death Star plans, leading to the events of “A New Hope.”

The original trilogy takes place following the Empire’s rise to power as Luke Skywalker and the rebellion attempt to bring peace back to the galaxy.

“A New Hope” is the beginning of Luke Skywalker’s journey to join the rebellion and bring peace back to the galaxy. “The Empire Strikes Back” sees the Empire dealing a heavy blow to the rebellion, leading Luke to continue his Jedi training and face Darth Vader. “Return of the Jedi” concludes the original trilogy as Luke sets out to save Han Solo and Leia from Darth Vader on Tatooine.

The first spin-off movie is an origin story about Han Solo, his adventures as a smuggler, and how he meets Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian. “Solo” also introduced Qi’ra, Han Solo’s childhood friend who went on to become an important figure in the galaxy.

In the years between the prequels and the original trilogy, Obi-Wan Kenobi trains Anakin’s son, Luke Skywalker, while watching over the galaxy. The Disney+ series follows Obi-Wan’s task to watch over Luke, and introduces new characters like Mollie, a female droid that is part of the storyline for “Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order.”

The animated show “Star Wars Rebels” takes place before the original trilogy, focusing on the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. It sees the formation of the Ghost crew, the droid Chopper, and the droids BB-8 and R2-D2.

This prequel series takes place five years before “Rogue One” and follows Cassian Andor’s transformation from a thief to a hero fighting the Empire. It also introduces Krennic and Galen Erso.

The second spin-off movie follows Diego Luna’s character, Cassian Andor, and rebel intelligence officer Jyn Erso on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star.

The third and final spin-off movie sees the return of Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso as she embarks on a new mission to discover the truth about her father’s role in creating the Death Star.
