Ubisoft reportedly cancels Immortal Fenyx Rising sequel
The Immortal Fenyx Rising sequel reportedly was canned as Ubisoft Quebec reportedly shifts focus to Assassin’s Creed and Star Wars projects. Anonymous developers cite a shift away from smaller Ubisoft franchises in favor of the publisher’s more recognizable brands. While the follow-up to Immortals Fenyx Rising may have been canceled, a spin-off and the first game’s DLC reportedly are still in development.
“Ubisoft isn’t planning to announce anything else,” one of the sources says regarding the Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel. “The sequel is cancelled.” The insiders suggest the absence of a follow-up to the Ubisoft Quebec action RPG is due to the perceived challenges in establishing the Fenyx Rising IP.
While the first game may have hinted at a sequel, there was no proper reveal like we’ve seen with other Ubisoft titles like Ghost Recon Breakpoint and The Division 2. Likewise, a spin-off was already rumored, and it’s possible that the first game’s DLC, Dark Skies, could have served as a bridge to the next game.
Given that the sequel was only rumored, and that Ubisoft has yet to officially respond to the report, we’ll likely never know the reasoning behind the alleged cancellation. However, it does align with what the insiders suggest is the company’s current strategy.
“Ubisoft tends to focus heavily on Assassin’s Creed and Star Wars projects,” one of the sources explains. “A follow-up to Immortals Fenyx Rising was probably considered too risky or demanding.” While the Assassin’s Creed and Star Wars projects have yet to release, they have been heavily publicized, suggesting they may have been perceived as more promising or simply more marketable.
Despite the lack of a follow-up to Immortals Fenyx Rising, the series may not be dead. The insiders suggest the possibility of a spin-off, similar to The Division 2: Dark Times, or a follow-up in a different form. The series hasn’t had a proper entry since 2014, so the developers at Capybara Games may be kept busy by Ubisoft’s current mobile game announcements.
With the recent reveal that The Invincible RPG is actually a mobile game and numerous delays to titles like Ghost Recon Breakpoint and The Division 2: Dark Times, Ubisoft’s current model has faced criticism. However, the cancellation does align with recent reports suggesting the Assassin’s Creed and Star Wars projects are favored over smaller franchises.
If nothing else, the cancellation does not mean the end of the Fenyx Rising universe. The company’s future is uncertain given the mixed reactions to recent announcements, but it’s clear that Ubisoft’s recent strategy will keep the anonymous sources busy for the time being.
