Nightdive Studios Eager to Remaster Unreal with Support from Quake Dev Cliff Bleszinski

Nightdive Studios, the team behind a number of fantastic classic game remasters, from Quake 2 to System Shock 2, says it wants to give Unreal the same treatment. The Quake 2 Remaster from Nightdive is among the best classic game remasters, and the studio says it has the backing of former Unreal designer Cliff Bleszinski in its pursuit of an Unreal remaster. Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick reaches out to Epic boss Tim Sweeney, saying that the remaster would be an honor, given the studio’s previous successes.

“As a long-time fan of Unreal, I and the team at Nightdive would be honored to be the caretakers of Unreal,” Kick says, addressing Sweeney directly. “We’ve done great things with the Quake license and would love to do the same with Unreal. Quake 2 was a success and we hope to repeat that with Unreal.”

This isn’t the first time that Nightdive has expressed interest in remastering Unreal. In the past, the studio says it tried to get Sweeney’s approval a few years ago. Despite this previous attempt, Kick makes another push after the success of Quake 2.

“We’re still interested in doing an Unreal remaster,” Kick says, responding to a fan. “It’s a great game and deserves to be kept alive.”

It is unclear if Epic will agree to the remaster, but Nightdive is not likely to give up easily. The studio’s persistence is a result of the success of Quake 2. The game, which launched on Steam earlier this year, is fresh in everyone’s memory. That, coupled with the fact that the Unreal engine is easy to work with, means it’s not a stretch to think the game could see a remaster.

Whether or not Unreal sees a remaster, we can expect to see more from Nightdive. The studio says it has more unannounced titles in development, and that “the future looks bright.”

Check out the original Unreal, if you haven’t already. You won’t regret it.
