If you're tired of the constant noise around Climate Change, but are still worried about what it means for our future, then Beecarbonize might be right up your alley. Its free-to-play real-time Card Game is a fun way to learn about the subject, and there are plenty of solutions (both real and hypothetical) to choose from.

Beecarbonize: A Real-Time Card Game

Beecarbonize is just like any other real-time card game, except that your units and resources are all dealing with climate change. You start off with a single industry card, and must manage your ecology, society, and science to find solutions among your cards to produce a 'golden card' that leads to victory.

Each turn, you earn coins in each of the four categories - resources, people, science - to buy new cards, upgrade existing ones, or expand categories. The goal is to increase your industry, while keeping everything else in check.

However, each time you start a new cycle, carbon is produced by the cards, leading to dangerous events. You can spend coins to solve them, but it comes with consequences. Sometimes you'll have to deal with only producing resources, or producing people with less food.

There are plenty of scenarios, and the game makes the subject of climate change approachable and interesting. The 'science' side of things is handled well; there are various solutions that you are encouraged to try out, from real-life solutions such as renewable energy or carbon capture and storage, to hypothetical or even fanciful ones, such as genetically engineering plants to produce less methane.

This is where the 'real-time' aspect comes in; as you play, you'll add cards to a database that differentiates between real and fictional solutions. I like this - it's a functional, simple version of a real-time card game, that still manages to keep things fun.

It's also free, which is always a plus. Beecarbonize is available on Steam.
