Final Fantasy 14 Almost Had Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters

Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters almost made their way into Final Fantasy 14, according to developer interviews translated by Twitter user A_Yoshi_I_Know. Players would have been able to experience the retro RPGs within the MMO, eliminating the need for a separate download. However, the implementation proved too “weird” and complex, requiring a separate system to play back the middleware used in the Pixel Remasters.

Final Fantasy 14 director and chief executive officer Naoki Yoshida explains that the idea was to make the Pixel Remasters playable in the Gold Saucer, letting players visit Mog and play the games without having to download another game.

“However, the technical implementation was pretty hard,” Yoshida says. “It’s not just a matter of playing back the middleware; you have to have a separate system that plays it back.” He says it’s “kinda weird” because it would require a “super programmer.”

“It’s not a priority at the moment,” Yoshida concludes, “but the fact that we even considered the crossover is pretty big.” The fact that Square Enix is open to the possibility of a similar collaboration in the future hints at the possibility of a similar collaboration in the future.

Having the Pixel Remasters in the Gold Saucer would be a great way to allow MMO-exclusive players who haven’t tried the older games a more accessible way to experience them. Final Fantasy 14 has plenty to look forward to, with the upcoming expansion Dawntrail and the game’s expansion to Xbox Series X/S.

Final Fantasy 14 director and chief executive officer Naoki Yoshida also plans to release three more expansions before his 60th birthday, indicating long-term plans for the game’s future.
