Final Fantasy 14 Expansion and Future Updates

Final Fantasy 14 is going nowhere, as producer Yoshi-P has announced a new expansion alongside news that they already have ideas mapped out for another three over the next decade.

The new Final Fantasy 14 expansion, called Dawntrail, looks like a bit of a bright, colourful break from the grimdark Final Fantasy 14 world of Eorzea we’ve been in for so long.

“We’re very happy to announce the next step in the world of Eorzea with the addition of a new world called Tural,” producer and director of Final Fantasy 14 Naoki Yoshida says. “This is a very bright, very happy world that offers a very different setting from the previous ones in the game.”

That’s not to say there isn’t still room for a little darkness – as anyone who played The Shadow of Mhach knows – but a brighter, more upbeat Tural offers a striking change of pace compared to the grimdarkness of the main world of Eorzea. Yoshida has already mapped out some ideas for the next two expansions, which will follow Dawntrail, so you can expect to keep playing Final Fantasy 14 even after Final Fantasy 17 comes out.

Final Fantasy 14 has shown no signs of slowing down, despite the success of other titles like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which remains a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox is a big deal, then, and improves the relationship between Xbox and Square Enix, which has previously said that Final Fantasy 16 remains a PlayStation 5 exclusive.

“It was a surprise for us to learn that Xbox was interested in Final Fantasy 14 as well,” Yoshida says. “But we’re very excited about this opportunity and we will do our best to make Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox a great game.”

Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox is expected to offer an influx of new players, so the decision to drop Roman numerals for future main series titles has been suggested again by former director Hajime Tabata.

“The positive and vibrant atmosphere of Tural has even affected our character Meteor,” Yoshida says, showing off a new look for the little sprite-based companion. “This change is thanks to the world of Tural.”

Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox is coming, then, and you won’t have to worry about being confused about whether it’s Final Fantasy 15 or not. The colourful, pleasant nature of Tural certainly seems to have affected its inhabitants, and from the look of things, Final Fantasy 14 isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
