Could an Intel 300 processor be the spiritual successor to the Pentium Gold G7400?

Could an upcoming Intel 300 processor be the company's new, entry-level chip? The 300 series processor is allegedly on the way, and will allegedly feature a pair of P cores paired with four threads. We're also expecting it to be the spiritual successor to the Pentium Gold G7400.

The 300 series chip is said to be part of Intel's entry-level lineup, with the company looking to replace the Celeron and Pentium sub-brands with a single, powerful processor. Based on the 300 series codename, we're expecting the chip to arrive in Q3 2023.

Intel 300 specs

According to MyDrivers, the 300 series processor will be a 3.6GHz chip, with a 6MB L3 cache and a 46W power consumption rating. It'll also feature an integrated UHD 730 Graphics unit, which is a lower-end iGPU compared to offerings like the UHD 740.

While this might sound like a mid-range or high-end i7 processor, we're expecting this to be a low-powered chip designed for light computing. It'll be great for casual web browsing, office work, and even video streaming, but it won't be powerful enough for gaming.

In particular, the 300 series chip will likely be less optimised for gaming than the Core i3 lineup. While a Core i3-8350K might be a 3.9GHz chip with eight cores, it also features an iGPU that can handle most games at 1080p. The 300 series processor will likely be a dual-core chip that's significantly slower, and doesn't feature an iGPU that's as optimised for gaming.

The arrival of the 300 series could be just around the corner, with the chip potentially set to arrive alongside Intel's 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh lineup. The new processors are expected to arrive in Q2 2023, and while they might not feature any 300 series processors, they should at least provide a glimpse at what's to come.
