Wondering what the true ending to the Daughter’s Story in Layers of Fear is? Inheritance is a side story originally released as DLC for the first game in the franchise. It lets players retell the Painter’s tale through the Daughter’s eyes.
Given that each story in Layers Of Fear 2023 has multiple endings, it’s safe to assume that this DLC is no different. Whether players are embarking on their first run with the Horror game or their third, one choice that seems innocuous may, in fact, change the Daughter’s reaction to her father’s return.
Depending on whether players keep seeing the same ending over and over or can’t quite figure out an unspoken trick to viewing the True Ending, they’ll probably need at least three runs in Inheritance to see everything the story has to offer. Layers Of Fear Inheritance True Ending
To get the true ending, players need to collect all nine of the Daughter’s childhood drawings throughout the house. It's important to note that players have to have finished the main story of Layers Of Fear to unlock Inheritance. At this point, they can visit the painter’s desk in the lighthouse to read the book that introduces the Daughter’s story.
Once players are ready, they should head downstairs and into the Studio, where the portrait of the Daughter’s father is hanging. They can walk up to it and interact to begin the story.
The main story in Inheritance follows the Daughter, now an adult, as she explores the empty house where she was born and raised. It contains the same rooms as in the Painter’s story: the Studio, Living Room, Dining Room, and Bedroom. Similarly, players' actions over the course of the run will cause the Daughter to lean either toward forgiving her father or fostering a lifelong resentment of him.
Again, there are multiple endings, but the True Ending is hard to uncover without a guide. The best bet is to follow the list below to know what needs to be done both for the standard ending(s) and for the hidden one.
The Daughter’s Story Alternate Endings

Do note that if players are going for Resentment, it’s actually best to stay out of the kitchen entirely. We made that mistake once and accidentally knocked a plate of food on the floor, which caused the dog to bark wildly and alerted our antagonist, who then came and chased us outside.
After completing the main rooms, the door to the Playroom, next to the Musician’s bedroom, will unlock. Players will find out which ending they got when they go inside, based on whether they took more Resentment or Forgiveness actions.
True Ending Requirements
To get the True Ending, players will need to collect all the Daughter’s childhood drawings throughout the house. If players are pursuing the alternate endings, it doesn’t matter which ones they’ve collected yet. It's important to note that players still need to have finished the main story of Layers Of Fear so the Playroom door is unlocked.
Players should not open the Playroom door until they have all nine drawings. So they should do this before placing them on the art gallery wall.
Once players have all nine drawings, they should not open the Playroom door. Instead, they should return to the Studio and place the drawings on the wall where they triggered the room’s flashback.
That’s all players need to do to witness the True Ending. To make sure they’ve seen it, they should walk up to the Playroom door and interact. It’s locked, with the option to “knock” – the button prompt even says “father”. This is the only time players can do this because of… well, you know, the story’s title.
