The Mortal Kombat 1 beta test

The Mortal Kombat 1 beta test is officially underway, and already we’re seeing some interesting things that hint at the story and characters we can expect to see in the fighting game’s eventual release. While the Elder Gods have previously been seen as little more than background characters, they appear to have a much more significant role in Liu Kang’s new timeline, potentially even playing a central part in the story.

Just a few days ago, we learned that Liu Kang’s decision to bring the Elder Gods back to the world in Mortal Kombat 11 has led to a much better outcome for all involved, with the ancient beings now aiding the fighters in their battle against Kronika.

In the beta test, we get to see how Liu Kang handles his mistakes in the past by keeping the Elder Gods around, even though they previously helped Shao Khan defeat the Dragon King in the main story of the first game. But perhaps his forgiveness extends to former enemies as well, as Geras is back on his side despite aiding Kronika in Mortal Kombat 11.

When Liu Kang performs a brutality move in the beta test, a message pops up that includes the words “Elder Gods” in brackets. It’s not clear whether this is simply a reference to the game’s name or if it’s an indication that the gods themselves will play a role in the main story. We’ve seen references to them already in the game’s lore videos, so it certainly seems likely that they’ll be present in some form.

This isn’t the only interesting thing we’ve seen in the beta test, either. Several fan-favourite characters have returned in different roles, and we’ve also seen a few nods to classic games as well. The possibilities are wide open for where things are headed, which we’ll hopefully get to see when the game appears at Gamescom Opening Night Live.

In the meantime, check out everything we know about the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 DLC character packs, as well as everything we expect to see in the single-player mode. You can also keep up to date with all the latest news on Jade and Sonya’s potential places on the roster.
