Mortal Kombat 1
Mortal Kombat 1 will feature some notable series mainstays who won’t be playable characters in the upcoming fighting game, as series co-creator Ed Boon hints that some characters won’t be playable due to the developers wanting to “surprise” players by not including them. While some fans are disappointed that Jade and Sonya won’t be playable in MK1, Boon’s comments suggest that their exclusion was intentional, and that it’s part of a plan to feature lesser-used fighters from the 3D era in order to have a “surprise factor” in the game’s roster.
Many fans are disappointed that Jade and Sonya won’t be playable in Mortal Kombat 1, but Boon explains that the goal was to feature some lesser-used fighters from the 3D era in order to have a roster with a surprise factor. This is good news for 3D-era fans who can expect more of their favorite characters to return, but it may be disappointing for dedicated Jade and Sonya supporters who may not see their favorite fighters in the starting roster or appear as cameo fighters.
“We decided that we would feature some lesser-used fighters from the 3D era to create a surprise factor,” Boon explains. “And some of our favorite characters won’t be there, but we think you’ll be happy with who we picked. Jade fans are particularly passionate. I remember when we were debating who would be in MK9 and someone brought up Mileena, and the response was something like ‘what about Jade?’”
Boon also says, “The roster has already been decided!” suggesting that the starting roster for Mortal Kombat 1 is already locked in, with the game set to launch on September 19, 2023.
It’s possible that Jade, Sonya, and others may be added as DLC in the future, but it sounds like they won’t be part of the initial wave of DLC. The first wave of DLC will include Takeda, Ermac, and Quan Chi, as well as guest fighters Homelander, Omni-Man, and Peacemaker.
