Mortal Kombat 1's new Invasions mode will finally reveal the whereabouts of Hanzo Hasashi, the original Scorpion. A version of Hanzo will appear as Scorpion, searching for a reality where his wife is alive. Her tragic backstory led to his rebirth as a skeletal Revenant, and now, the wraith seeks vengeance in Mortal Kombat 1, as developer NetherRealm Studios describes a vengeful and enraged warrior.
Hanzo’s history is a dark one, and his role as Scorpion in the Mortal Kombat franchise has always felt somewhat tragic. A simple farmer, he came to learn of a tragic massacre that occurred in his village. Driven by anger, Hanzo enlisted in the Shaolin monks and trained for years until he met the Elder God, Onaga. The dragon tattooed his flesh, and Hanzo was reborn as a skeletal Revenant.
In the fighting game’s main story, we learn that Hanzo discovered the Multiverse, and that his wife, Kyoko, was married to the new Scorpion, Kuai Liang. Scorpion’s rage fuels his desire to destroy MK1’s timeline, but this is a separate side story. The Invasions mode resembles previous what-if? tower endings, presented through slideshow artwork.
We’ve known for some time that Hanzo will feature in MK1, though it’s unclear if he will appear in the main story or in other roles. The above video and the official website shed light on his story.
