Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 announced with new characters in surprise sequel

A surprise sequel to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is coming, as the 2018 brawler gets a follow-up titled Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2. The announcement suggests that the new game will be more of a do-over, adding content that the original was lacking and delivering a more polished experience overall. The quick turnaround is notable for the genre, which often takes years between iterations, and the original lacked content beyond the fighting core.

The trailer for the sequel below (via PC Gamer) shows off a lot of new things, with new characters, stages, revamped existing stages, a new campaign mode, and more modes in general. There's also a big emphasis on crossplay being available on all platforms.

We also get a lot of quick cuts of the returning cast getting visual improvements, as well as new mini-games and supers, similar to ultimate attacks in Smash Bros. Some of the new characters include Squidward and Jimmy Neutron, while the TMNT cast gets completed with Donatello and Raphael.

The singleplayer campaign looks to be focused on stopping Vlad Plasmius from taking over the Nickelodeon universe. It's also worth noting that the announcement comes in the wake of Warner Bros.' Multiversus, which saw player numbers decline after a successful launch, raising questions about its future.

The quick turnaround on the sequel and the fact that it's a sequel rather than a large DLC pack makes sense from a sales perspective. However, the fact that it's coming so soon after the original, and is adding a lot of content, suggests that it might be what the game needs to really shine.

That quick turnaround also suggests that the original was not as successful as hoped, and that the decision to make it a numbered sequel rather than a large DLC pack also makes sense from a sales perspective. Overall, this might be what the game needs to shine.

The original game suffered from a lack of content beyond the fighting core and a repetitive structure, so hopefully the sequel addresses those issues. You can also see some of the new stages and characters in the trailer below:
