Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 reveals some significant changes to the fighting game, as the roster expands with a new character and the rock-paper-scissors mechanic is ditched in favour of a meter mechanic. The first All-Star Brawl game, which released in October last year, aimed to provide a fresh take on the likes of Super Smash Bros. by removing the rock-paper-scissors mechanic seen in most fighting games. But developer Ludosity and publisher Fair Play Labs have responded to feedback by making some big changes for the sequel.

The first gameplay breakdown for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 comes from YouTuber The King of the World, who provides a frame-by-frame analysis of the new gameplay trailer. The most substantial change comes in the form of a meter mechanic, which charges up during battle and grants various benefits.

The “Slime Meter” allows you to enhance your special moves, with SpongeBob’s bubble blow becoming much more powerful as it grows to an enormous size. There’s also a “Slime Burst” which acts as a combo breaker, stopping mid-air momentum and sending the opponent back to the ground. Finally, the meter can be used to unleash a cinematic attack, dealing massive damage to your opponent in a single hit.

This is paired with a new theme and aesthetic, with SpongeBob and Patrick shown fighting on a futuristic city street as a giant robot battle takes place in the background. Patrick can be seen crushing his opponents with his house, while SpongeBob uses a boatmobile as his primary transportation.

Many fans of the series are excited to see Plankton join the roster, as the tiny antagonist faces off against SpongeBob in his “Robot Suit.” The rock-paper-scissors mechanic from the first game is also well-received, with Ludosity and Fair Play Labs responding to feedback by removing it in favour of the new meter.

The full roster hasn’t yet been revealed but we do know that Plankton joins alongside SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and many more. All-Star Brawl 2 releases later this year.
