A fake Nintendo Switch 2 leak is causing a stir
A Nintendo Switch 2 leak is circulating on social media, but don’t be fooled by it. While the packaging looks pretty realistic, the design of the console itself is so bizarre that fans are mocking it by making their own versions. The most popular Nintendo Switch 2 “leak” is a bizarre device resembling two Joy-Cons glued to a plastic tablet, and the errors in the Xenoblade Chronicles logo and odd capitalization in the title of Tears of the Kingdom are dead giveaways that it’s a fake.
Unbelievable Nintendo Switch 2 leak
We’ve all been there: you’re browsing Twitter and suddenly, out of nowhere, you see something so mind-blowingly unbelievable that you’re forced to double-take. Sure enough, it’s a Nintendo Switch 2 leak. Well, sort of.
Seven years is a long time for a Nintendo console to be on the market. Sure, there were five-year gaps between the Nintendo 64 and GameCube, and the same again between the Wii and Wii U, but the Switch’s lifespan is already longer than most. Some might say this is because the hybrid hasn’t reached its full potential, but I think it’s because Nintendo’s getting the next one right.
The aftermath of the Switch Online debacle
A Nintendo Switch 2 leak is the last thing the company needs at the moment, because it’s still dealing with the aftermath of the Switch Online debacle. Amidst a flurry of rumours, Nintendo has yet to issue any official word on its next console, but that hasn’t stopped one particular image from going viral.
If you’ve seen the Nintendo Switch 2 leak on Twitter, you probably did a double take yourself. The image features a device that resembles two Joy-Cons glued to a cheap tablet, and most people who see it recognise it as fake immediately. Even so, I’m going to break down exactly why it’s so bad, because you can never be too sure on the internet.
The flaws in the fake console
The first and most blatant red flag is the game icons on the front of the fake console. The Breath of the Wild icon is fine, but the Xenoblade Chronicles logo is completely wrong, and the capitalisation in the title of Tears of the Kingdom is also weird.
The box also claims to be the Nintendo Switch 2, which flies in the face of Nintendo’s previous naming conventions. The NES, Super NES, N64, GameCube, Wii, and Wii U were all simply called by their respective numbers, and only the handheld-console hybrid was called the Nintendo Switch.
The worst Switch 2 “leak” competition
This whole situation has inspired a competition among Nintendo fans to create the worst Switch 2 “leak,” and one post is standing out as the frontrunner. I’m not sure if the creator of this monstrosity is in on the joke, but it’s so absurd that it deserves a spot among the top contenders.
While we’re on the subject of previous infamous console “leaks,” the floating Xbox 720 orbs before the reveal of the Xbox One are on my mind, as well. It’s safe to say that any leaked image of Nintendo’s next console is fake, because the company wouldn’t let such important information leak to a random person on Twitter.
The public will likely only see the true design of the Nintendo Switch 2 when Nintendo itself is ready to unveil it. In the meantime, we’ll continue to see wild fakes circulate online, and it’s entertaining to think that some people might actually believe them.
