How to Install a CPU in Your Motherboard
Installing a CPU in your motherboard may seem daunting, but with a few simple steps, anyone can do it. It's important to handle your processor with care and install it correctly in the motherboard socket to avoid damaging your CPU, motherboard, and other components.
Be Careful with the Pins!
Before you begin, keep in mind that older AMD AM4 processors have pins on the bottom, while newer AM5 CPUs and Intel's consumer CPUs have pads on the bottom. Be cautious not to bend the pins when handling the CPU or socket.
Prep Your Motherboard
If you're building a new PC, it's recommended to install your CPU with the motherboard outside of the case. Place the motherboard on an anti-static bag or on top of the motherboard box for added protection.
Open the Socket
To install the CPU, you'll need to open the socket. On most recent Intel and AMD platforms, simply push down on the metal lever on the right side and move it slightly away from the socket. On Intel and current AMD boards, lift the silver metal CPU retention plate away from the socket.
Line Up the Triangle Arrows
Before placing the CPU in the socket, locate the small triangle or arrow on the socket or retention plate. This is crucial to ensure proper alignment and prevent damage to your components.
Gently Place the CPU in the Socket
Now, carefully place the CPU in the center of the socket, aligning the bottom edge of the CPU with the bottom edge of the socket. Make sure the CPU is fully seated inside the plastic frame around the socket.
Locking the CPU in the Socket
With the CPU in place, it's time to secure it. Double-check that the CPU and socket arrows are aligned. Press the retention lever down firmly until it's parallel to the motherboard, and slip it under the metal piece that holds it down.
