Capcom's Games for Windows Live Issue
The debacle surrounding Capcom games becoming unplayable on Steam due to the remnants of Games for Windows Live (GfWL) code has now exceeded 600 days. Despite numerous attempts to fix the issue, these affected games remain broken, with no apparent solution in sight.
Affected Games
The list of games affected by this problem includes Lost Planet 2, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Street Fighter 4 (excluding the Ultra edition), and Street Fighter X Tekken.
The Frustrating Situation
When attempting to play any of these games on Steam, users are met with disappointment. The purchase option is disabled, and a message appears, stating, "The game you are trying to play uses Microsoft's Games for Windows - Live client to connect to online features. Unfortunately, it appears these features are no longer available." This message has remained unchanged for over 600 days, leaving players without any further information.
A Disappointing Outcome
It is disheartening to see that these games were once available for purchase in their broken state. Street Fighter X Tekken, for example, was even listed on Steam's store, allowing users to access the purchase page but not actually buy the game. Capcom eventually patched the game, making it playable again. However, it has since become unplayable once more, with seemingly no way to fix it.
Impact on Fans
Fans who have invested in these titles are understandably disappointed. PC Gamer contributor Kerry Brunskill even penned a heartfelt article about the beloved game Lost Planet 2, which is now no longer playable on PC.
Exploring Alternatives
As PC Game Spotlight points out, fans of these titles may have to resort to fan patches or piracy to experience them, as Capcom does not appear to be addressing the issue. This grim situation serves as a stark reminder of how impermanent games can be. Defunct Steam pages resemble obituaries, and the potential loss of games tied to specific platforms and online services is a concerning thought.
Preservation and Legal Concerns
The recent lawsuit by Atlus against fans maintaining a Shin Megami Tensei Imagine Online server raises concerns about the risks preservationists face. Although it is unlikely that Capcom would take similar legal action to protect Lost Planet 2, the fear of such actions may discourage preservation efforts.
The Future of Gaming Libraries
This situation underscores the importance of preserving gaming history and raises questions about the future of our current libraries in the ever-changing gaming landscape.
