Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4070 Founders Edition Graphics Card
Igor's Lab reports that Nvidia's latest graphics card, the GeForce RTX 4070 Founders Edition, is now equipped with a new 12V-2x6 power connector. This new connector is an improvement over the previous 12VHPWR connector and aims to resolve the melting connector issue that affected previous RTX 40-series graphics cards.
The main difference between the original 12VHPWR connector and the new 12V-2x6 plug is the shorter sense pins, measuring approximately 1.7 mm. According to Igor's Lab, the design of the new connector prevents over-insertion of the sense pins, which could cause unstable voltage activation, overheating, or even melting.
Currently, the sole producer of the new 12V-2x6 power connectors is Astron, with Nvidia listed as its sole user. It is possible that other graphics card suppliers will adopt the new plug in the future, but most are likely to wait for PCI-SIG to formally specify the new plug before incorporating it into their products.
Despite the potential risk, Nvidia has chosen to use the new connector in its RTX 4070 FE. With the RTX 4070 FE being highly regarded as one of the best graphics cards available, this decision may prove to be successful.
When Will PCI-SIG Finalize the New Power Connector?
The introduction of the new power connector emphasizes the importance of staying updated on the latest technological advancements. By keeping abreast of these developments, users can remain competitive by taking proactive measures to ensure a more stable and efficient graphics card.
