Best PC Games Mods
What are the best PC Games mods? It’s a question that’s near impossible to answer. There are so many mods out there for so many different games, and the communities that create and maintain them are as passionate as they are talented.
While our list of the best PC games has plenty of amazing mods, there are few things as exciting as the iconic mods that helped define an era, like Counter Strike, Dota, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, and Garry’s Mod. Plus, you don’t have to look further than the likes of Paradox Interactive and Mojang for examples of developers who started out as modders.
So, whether you’re looking for more detailed character bodies to ogle, or a Minecraft Hunger Games mod to ruin your favourite sandbox game, we’ve got you covered. In no particular order, here are the best PC games mods.
Tinkers Construct
Minecraft, at its core, is about placing blocks to build things. But there are so many different ways you can build things, and that’s where Tinkers comes in. It’s a Minecraft mod that adds a whole new tool-building system, allowing you to create any tool you can imagine from a variety of materials.
Calamity
Calamity is a mod for the indie game Terraria, which adds new weapons, armor, enemies, and bosses. It’s a bit of a contrast to the base game’s light-hearted and playful tone in that it’s a lot more grim. There’s also a Witcher-style potion system, and a more in-depth building system.
Garry’s Mod
Garry’s Mod is a sandbox game in which you can place and move things like chairs, lamps, and tables to build your own contraptions. You could use it to build a rocket, an electric chair, or even something a little more risque. It’s a highly popular game that’s spawned numerous YouTube series, including The Diamond Minecart and Yogscast.
Desert Combat
Desert Combat was one of the most popular Battlefield 1942 mods, adding modern weapons and vehicles to the game. It eventually led to Battlefield 2 being rebranded as a sequel to Desert Combat.
Unofficial patches
The unofficial patches for Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Oblivion are essential mods for anyone playing these classic Elder Scrolls games on PC. They fix hundreds of thousands of bugs that the developers at Bethesda left in the base games.
Talking butt plug
Skyrim is littered with goofy mods like this one. It adds a talking butt plug that provides a wealth of unique dialogue based on your current location and current quests. It’s silly and seemingly pointless, but it’s also hard to stop laughing at.
Optifine
If you play Minecraft but haven’t installed optifine, then you’re doing it wrong. Optifine is a must-have mod because it not only optimizes your game, but also adds shader support so you can enhance your beautiful Minecraft worlds with cool shaders.
Thomas the Tank Engine as Alduin
The Skyrim mod Thomas the Tank Engine replaces Alduin, the dragon who serves as the main antagonist of the game, with Thomas the Tank Engine. Why? Because why not?
Macho Man Randy Savage as Gollum
Another Skyrim mod, this one replaces Gollum’s voice with the gravel-throated tones of ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage. Just try not to think about how the hell someone managed to get Randy Savage’s voice clips into a Bethesda game.
Dota
Dota started life as the Defense of the Ancients Warcraft mod, eventually growing into a standalone game called Dota 2. While it’s still technically a mod for Warcraft 3, it’s hard to imagine it ever living in that shadow.
The Long War
The Long War is a major XCOM mod that rebalances and expands Valve’s turn-based strategy game. It’s so significant that Firaxis has even included it in XCOM 2 as a core feature.
Team Fortress
The Team Fortress mod for Quake is, in part, responsible for the entire online FPS gaming scene we have today. It also spawned a sequel, Proquake, and inspired countless subsequent games.
Hot Coffee
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas saw the infamous Hot Coffee mod, which unlocked a strip club which Rockstar had originally left out of the game. It caused such outrage, and was so heavily criticized by politicians, that it helped end the era of the ESRB games ratings system.
Porn mods
Skyrim’s a big place, and while the internet has plenty to offer, a little homegrown smut never hurts. Thankfully, there are a few Skyrim mods that will spice up your dragon-slaying experience, such as the Devious Devices bondage mod.
