What Gamers Think
We asked the PC Game Spotlight community what they believe to be the worst thing about modern games. Our question was answered with everything from multiplayer modes and battle royale games, to the increasing size of AAA games and nostalgia.
Making enemies bullet sponges on higher difficulties to claim it being a challenge is a divisive opinion in the gaming community. While some argue that games like Borderlands require spongey enemies for the gameplay to be fun and engaging, others find it frustrating and time-consuming to spend hours on the same mission because of a boss with excessive health.
The debate extends to other games like Destiny 2, where bullet sponges can hinder the use of abilities that rely on killing enemies quickly. In some cases, it is seen as the worst part of games like Half-Life, where it becomes unrealistic for enemies to survive multiple headshots.
On the other hand, some players, particularly milsim enthusiasts, appreciate the challenge of bullet sponge enemies in games like The Division 2. There were also some comments regarding the lack of single-player games, with some wishing for more solo experiences in the market.

Here are some of the best answers to our question:
The desire for multiplayer modes in games is another topic of contention. Some argue that studios have been too focused on multiplayer aspects, neglecting the development of a strong single-player experience.
“The studios have forgotten that single-player is still a thing,” one commenter states. “Not everything has to be multiplayer.” Others find joy in playing games with their friends and appreciate the option for multiplayer.
The lack of multiplayer in certain games is seen as a missed opportunity. “There’s no multiplayer in Harry Potter,” one commenter notes. “Imagine playing Hogwarts Mystery with your friends!” However, some players prefer gaming as a solitary experience and do not feel the need for multiplayer modes.
Another common complaint is the demand for battle royale modes in games. This is often seen as an annoyance by players who wish for more single-player games in the market.
“There’s a call for more single-player games in the market,” one commenter remarks. “Yet, whenever a big studio announces a single-player game, the first thing everyone says is ‘will it have multiplayer?’” The perception that indie games are superior to AAA games is another controversial viewpoint.
While indie games are praised for their creativity, AAA games are considered to have better overall quality and production value. However, it’s important to recognize that both AAA and indie games have their strengths and weaknesses. The notion that all indie games should be praised solely because they are developed by smaller teams is also disputed.
“The complexity and potential bugs in modern games are often misunderstood,” another commenter states. “The evolution of gaming has led to more complex and graphically advanced titles, which can result in more bugs.”
Nostalgia can also skew perceptions of older games, as the gaming industry has undergone significant changes in recent years. Factors such as the democratization of game development and the availability of game engines have transformed the industry.
The gaming industry is now larger than any other media industry, with more games being made by a diverse range of developers. As such, we have seen developers break new ground in gaming by creating games that have never been seen before.
