With the Splinter Cell remake generating a lot of buzz, we take a look at other potentially great remakes, including Silent Hill and System Shock.

Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2 is one of the greatest games of all time, period. Its story of anguished fatherhood and guilt could benefit from being modernised, and we’d genuinely love to see what a modern twist on the horror classic could look like.

F.E.A.R.

While the first F.E.A.R. is a wonderfully creepy shooter, the second game is where the series really came into its own. The monstous, multi-dimensional Alma is one of gaming’s most innovative, terrifying villains, and we’d love to see what a modern reimagining of her could be like.

Serious Sam

While the Serious Sam games are intentionally retro, the third game, Serious Sam 3: BFE, was actually a surprisingly gorgeous take on the series’ hellish, endless hordes of enemies. We’d love to see a full, proper Serious Sam remake with the same level of visual fidelity as the third game.

Soul Reaver

The first three Legacy of Kain games are absolutely legendary, and the second game, Soul Reaver, is among the most impressive, atmospheric, and genuinely scary games ever made. While the series has taken on a number of new forms over the years, we’d love to see a fully remastered Reaver.

Fallout: New Vegas

While it might not be quite as iconic as the first game, Bethesda’s take on the post-apocalypse has plenty of fans of its own. We’d love to see a proper, HD remake of Obsidian’s fantastic spin on the series, with all the additional content and mods that version shipped with included from the off.

Deus Ex

Eidos Montreal has already done a wonderful job with the reboot of this legendary series, but we’d still love to see a classic, retro-looking Deus Ex. With the series’ stealth roots in mind, we’d love to see a faithful, high-res remake of the first game, with all the additional content and story elements of Invisible War included.

Mario RPG

While Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is a fantastic homage to the original Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, it’s still a little rough around the edges. We’d love to see a fully remastered and rebuilt Mario RPG, complete with all the bells and whistles of Superstar Saga, and maybe even the third, genuinely quite good Mario & Luigi game too.

Persona 3

Persona 3 is one of those games that’s aged pretty gracefully, but we’d love to see a full-blown, faithful, and visually overhauled Persona 3 Reload. The new side-stories and gameplay changes would be a huge draw, but we’d also love to see more of the game’s stylised environments and character designs brought to the level of fidelity we see in games like Red Dead Redemption 2.

Max Payne

The System Shock remake and Black Mesa (a Half-Life remake) are already two of the most exciting things happening in gaming right now, so hearing that Remedy is also remaking Max Payne is just the best news. While the first game is the classic, we love the second even more, and seeing both given the full HD treatment by the team behind Alan Wake and Alan Wake’s American Nightmare would be absolute awesomeness.

System Shock 2

The System Shock remake is absolutely stunning and proof that EA was right to give the series to Night Dive Studios. We’d love to see the studio take on System Shock 2 next, as it’s genuinely one of the greatest games of all time.

Black Mesa

We’re big fans of the Half-Life remake, Black Mesa, as the game looks gorgeous and plays wonderfully. While the game is still a work in progress, it’s already showing a lot of potential, and we’d love to see it finish strong.
