Star Wars Outlaws
With Star Wars Outlaws, developer Ready at Dawn seeks to recapture some of the magic from the Imperial Agent storyline from Star Wars: The Old Republic by focusing on the grimy underbelly of the Star Wars universe and the life of an average Joe. The game’s protagonist, Kay, is a scoundrel who, despite having an appreciation for the bigger picture, simply wants to live a free life and find her place in the galaxy. However, after a heist gone wrong, she becomes one of the galaxy’s most wanted and must navigate the criminal underworld to escape her predicament.
Outlaws looks to play with your choices and negotiations with the criminal syndicates. Will you play nice with them for rewards? Or betray them and face the consequences? The setting and narrative seem to be the main draw here, as it appears to offer a deeper understanding of why the grime of the galaxy is worth protecting.
According to The Art of Star Wars Outlaws book, the game’s narrative director, Navid Khavari, “wanted to show a side of the galaxy that’s rarely seen,” referring to the dirty and colorful aspects. This contrasts with the sterilized image many have of the Empire as a whole, highlighting that not everything is as it seems.
Star Wars Outlaws is set to release next year, so keep an eye out for more news. In the meantime, you can read about some of the other upcoming games that are sure to keep you entertained.
