Star Wars Outlaws: An Open-World RPG with a Familiar Feel
Star Wars Outlaws promises to be a more manageable, action-adventure RPG compared to the expansive Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, as Ubisoft’s creative director emphasizes the importance of creating a game that can be played, enjoyed, and finished.
“It was very important for our team to strike the right balance between density and richness, so that players can experience the vastness of the universe and the many stories it has to tell, while also being able to play through it from start to finish,” Julian Gerighty says. “The focus is on delivering a dense and rich open-world adventure that players can explore at their own pace.”
So how large is Star Wars Outlaws’ open world? Gerighty says that Star Wars Outlaws planets will be split into two to three zones, similar in size to those in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Four planets have been confirmed, which means there will be at least eight to 12 zones, excluding space exploration.
“We absolutely prioritise character and story, ensuring a fusion of narrative and gameplay,” narrative director Navid Khavari says. “Players can expect a high degree of cohesion between the various elements of the game, and the story will continue to progress whether they’re exploring the world, completing missions, engaging in combat, or upgrading their character.”
This may raise concerns that Star Wars Outlaws will resemble God of War Ragnarok and Jedi Survivor, two recent open-world games that prioritise story over everything else, including gameplay and environment. While Outlaws may look similar on the surface, it is important to remember that it is the first-ever open-world Star Wars game, and it’s not expected to be a 200-to-300-hour epic like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
In fact, Outlaws won’t use procedural generation, like Starfield, ensuring that each zone is hand-crafted. This allows for the inclusion of iconic locations like Mos Eisley and Jabba’s Palace, which Star Wars fans may be thrilled to revisit. However, with a smaller number of hand-crafted zones and fewer planets, Outlaws offers a more manageable experience compared to recent Ubisoft games.
While Star Wars fans may be concerned about revisiting Tatooine again (for the third or fourth time), the smaller number of hand-crafted zones should alleviate some of the repetition concerns that plagued Starfield.
