A guide to the best Star Wars: The Old Republic expansions

You might have heard about the highly-praised Star Wars: The Old Republic expansions and wondered how to get your hands on them. With new installments offering amazing plots, dire consequences for beloved NPCs, and much more besides, it’s no wonder you might be wondering if one or two would fit in with your play style.

While there are several SWTOR expansions listed here, we have taken one of the most badass Star Wars characters ever, Revan, as our example character. If those expansions don’t appeal to you, you can try out the Jedi Knight or Sith Warrior if you want to stick to your original class, or you can make an Imperial Agent. All the expansions will be available to you once you subscribe once, even if your subscription runs out afterwards.

Legacy

Returning to the main status quo, Legacy brings players back to the Republic and the Empire, both once again divided on their visions for the galaxy. Legacy fits in just before the expansion Onslaught, and this new content picks up where it left off, introducing a more complex story involving the great Darth Malgus.

Republic players jump back in time a little to save people on a doomed planet, while Empire players save the planet itself from the same threat, in order to help the former Emperor. This expansion helps to continue the story after a major cease-fire that stopped the planet-wide war, so there’s a chance for battle in some locations.

Onslaught

Onslaught is considered by many players to be the best expansion, and this continues the story introduced in Legacy by picking up right where it left off. This particular expansion introduces a more complicated plot that involves Imperial Agent SCORPIO (yes, seriously), and the tracked Darth Malgus as he travels through the galaxy, so it’s a good choice for people who aren’t Force users.

The Empire is desperate to stop him from gathering support and bringing down their new Emperor, while the Republic struggles to keep up with his cloaked movements. Onslaught is a direct continuation of Legacy, so it’s worth playing even if you don’t pick up any others.

Rise of the Hutt Cartel

While The Hutt Cartel is often overlooked, Rise of the Hutt Cartel focuses mainly on its neglected group by showing them to be a threat to both factions. The Republic must save their target on a lush paradise, while the Empire attempts to save the Hutt-controlled world inhabited by the Chiss people.

The Empire and Republic each have different narratives in this expansion, so it’s worth playing through both endings to experience every aspect. Players are often encouraged to take whichever origin world they bonded with as their characters, so if you’re an Imkere flashpoint veteran, head to Balmorra.

Revan

If you’re a fan of The Old Republic’s lore, you might have heard of one of the strongest Force users, Revan. This expansion is dedicated to this legend, and alongside an immersive story there are new companions who, as canon proves, will play a significant role in many future events.

Revan introduces new characters for both Republic and Empire, but naturally, this choice does depend on your previous connection to the companions acquired in the main game. You’re sure to have a deep connection to these companions if you chose to be a Republic Trooper or an Imperial Agent, which can enhance your gameplay experience.

Eternal Throne

The third and final expansion of Fallen Empire, and a direct continuation, Eternal Throne offers a connected plot that causes consequence for the entire galaxy. Despite the gameplay differences some players experience due to new planets and companion changes listed above, the choice of class shouldn’t matter here (unless it’s one with a previous personal connection to the Emperor, see above).

Companion changes in Eternal Throne include the introduction of new romance options, the departure of a few companions and the addition of new ones. Eternal Throne is guaranteed to change your companions forever, resulting in new companions with unexpected consequences (if you’re a Republic Trooper, you’ll understand this one).

The Immortal Emperor and his children also change companions, abandoning their Sith and Imperial allies in favour of more, how shall we say, malleable help. There are also different planets and introduction of new battle zones in Eternal Throne, so even if you’re not a fan of the companions of any particular class
