Steam Deck gaming options continue to improve
Valve reports that 75% of tested games are now categorized as Playable or Verified on the Steam Deck handheld device. This is a significant improvement from the 60% reported in April. With over 10,000 games now Playable or Verified, the Steam Deck has surpassed expectations at launch.
Valve continues to test and verify games, having tested over 13,000 titles thus far. While some demanding games exceed the hardware limits of the Steam Deck, the future of handheld Steam gaming looks promising.
In a recent blog post, Valve stated that over 10,000 games are now Playable or Verified on the Steam Deck. This figure has increased from 8,000 games in April and 6,000 games in December, which was the first official month of Steam Deck testing.
Although some of the most popular Steam games were initially not classified as Playable or Verified, the situation has improved in recent months. Currently, only Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is not supported on the Steam Deck out of the top 10 games.
It's important to note that not all of the 10,000 verified/playable games on Steam are highly rated, as there are many low-quality games available. However, with the growing market for handheld gaming devices, it's likely that new and improved models will be introduced.
According to Boiling Steam, the Steam Deck testing process is running faster than ever. Valve's verification program now handles around 3,000 games every six months, including unreleased titles. This is a significant increase from around 2,000 games per six months in late 2018.
While Steam Deck gaming has its limitations, such as stability issues with games like The Last of Us, the future of Steam Deck gaming remains positive. More publishers and developers are getting their games verified for the platform.
Looking ahead, there is a possibility of a potential Steam Deck 2, especially with the introduction of the Asus Ally, a handheld with higher specs than the Steam Deck. With over a million Steam Decks already sold and an expected three million units to be sold by the end of 2023, staying informed about the latest developments in Steam Deck gaming is crucial for enthusiasts.
