Terraria Underground Base: Tips and Tricks
Terraria is filled with opportunities to build an impressive underground base. Carving out a subterranean dwelling at the beginning of the sandbox game leaves you less vulnerable to enemy invasions, and it also provides an endless supply of materials for expansion. However, building an effective underground fortress in Terraria can be tricky, so we’ve got some Tips to help you enhance your defenses and turn your base into an impenetrable fortress.
Terraria has a variety of threats, but you can’t build a house on every planet in the sandbox game. During the early stages, building a surface-layer house leaves you vulnerable to the many enemies that spawn in daylight. To protect yourself from enemy invasions, you should dig down and build an underground base. A subterranean dwelling provides all-around defense, and it also gives you the freedom to experiment with traps and other devious methods of destruction.
Build a Terraria Underground Base
You can build a Terraria underground base on any solid-stone block, but it’s usually best to place your initial bed and house in a tunnel. Underground Bases provide all-around defense and infinite materials for expansion, so it’s your job to make sure it’s as impressive as possible.
Terraria underground bases are ideal for traps, so we recommend enhancing your defenses using mechanical contraptions. Turn your base into an homage to ‘Home Alone’ by placing spiked balls and Super Dart Traps every few blocks. You could also place a group of NPCs in your base to lower the maximum spawn rate of enemies. If you want to protect them during dangerous events, build a small ‘hideout’ away from your main dwelling.
Here are a few tips for building a Terraria underground base:
Underground bases present unique challenges, such as the Corruption threat. To protect yourself from the Corruption and its deadly Corruptor enemies, you should build a three-block-wide pit around your base. Open spaces or pits also stop Worms from tunneling into your base, and they can also protect you from other physical threats such as Giant Spiders.
If you need to venture into the Corruption, use materials that are immune to its damaging effects. Mud is one of the best materials for mitigating the risk of infection spreading, and you can also use sunflowers for the same effect.
You’re free to do whatever you like in your Terraria underground base, but you should avoid breaking objects that can’t be placed again. Placing objects and furniture gives your base a unique feel, and it also prevents it from looking too bare.
Smooth out stone surfaces to make them look more inviting, and add dirt, grass, and walls to create a contrasting and ruin-like ambiance. Use wood or stone for the walls of individual structures and incorporate Lead Fences and Wooden Beams for additional detail. Decorate with wooden crates, portraits, candles, and different light sources to enhance the interior vibe.
While underground bases aren’t ‘typical’ Terraria structures, they still benefit from some decorative touches. Consider using water and lava (carefully) to add visual appeal to your underground base. You can also use the Molten Furnace for a unique lighting effect, or mix in furniture and other items that can’t be placed on natural or wooden blocks.
