Hidden Secrets and Easter Eggs in Terraria

Looking for some of the best hidden secrets and Easter Eggs in Terraria? The sheer size of Terraria’s world means there are countless secrets for players to discover and enjoy, including collaborations with other games, pop culture references, and plenty of amusing jokes.

With a massive list of Terraria bosses to beat and enemies to defeat, it’s easy to overlook the numerous jokes and nods to various pop culture sources scattered throughout the game – that is, until a Terraria player uploads a video highlighting them all. Thankfully, we’ve done the hard work for you, and this article contains all of the best Easter eggs and secrets in Terraria, from the Doctor’s set to a Terraria Stardew Valley reference.

Terraria Doctor Who Easter egg

The Doctor’s set includes a shirt, jacket, and pants that resemble the outfit worn by the Eleventh Doctor from Doctor Who. The suit also includes a Fez hat, although this item is not part of the set. The hat does, however, reference the Doctor’s catchphrase, “Fez’s are cool.”

During daytime, the Wizard NPC in Terraria will talk about the magic he’s learning, and reference his failed attempt to bring an Angel Statue to life. This nod to the Weeping Angels from the show is quite amusing, considering the statues usually turn into the statues that will mercilessly kill you.

Terraria hidden objects

In Terraria, among the background objects that randomly generate are a gold sword stuck in a stone, and a large golden key. If you destroy the sword, you’ll receive the powerful Enchanted Sword, which is Terraria’s best weapon for much of the game. However, if you manage to obtain the Enchanted Sword before destroying the sword, the blade will remain intact.

Occasionally, if you hear ducks quacking in the distance, they’ll stop and quack with what sounds like a human voice, which is quite an unexpected surprise while exploring Terraria’s vast landscape.

During Halloween, you can obtain the Terraria Creeper set, which allows you to dress up as the iconic Minecraft Creeper. The item’s description references the Minecraft mob’s famous face: “Nobody can stand quite as tall as a man in a top hat, holding a spiked iron ball, next to a giant exploding creeper.”

The Guide NPC has a random name generation, but if his name happens to be Andrew, you’ll get a rare Green Cap upon his death.

Terraria Stardew Valley joke

Terraria includes a reference to the popular farming simulator game Stardew Valley. In the desert biome, you can find Terraria’s version of the popular drink Joja Cola, which you can consume. Upon death, the Guide will say, “I hope that’s not the last of the Joja Cola,” referencing the store chain that sells the drink in Stardew Valley. If you manage to obtain Joja Cola while the Guide is alive, the Dryad NPC will purify the drink, opening a portal to Stardew Valley and rewarding you with a Stardrop.

Cave Story Terraria references

You can find a reference to the game Cave Story in Terraria through the robot hat vanity item dropped by Piranhas and Angler Fish. The item also has a familiar sound if you examine it.

ActRaiser Terraria references

The old platformer game ActRaiser is a big inspiration for Terraria, and there are numerous references throughout the game. The Artisan Loaf item is dropped by the Bats, and reminds a character named Teddy of home, and the items dropped by the Golem resemble the statues from ActRaiser that the player would raise to help fight enemies.

Plantera’s name and metal music during boss fight

The name of the Terraria boss Plantera is derived from the favorite band of Cenx, one of the game’s developers, Pantera. The metal music you hear during Plantera’s boss fight and the appearance of “The Axe” dropped by Plantera also resemble elements associated with the band Pantera.

Terraria boss music

Many of the Terraria bosses have their own unique music, which you can hear in the following playlist:
