Death Stranding: Grounded reveals gruesome detail

Death Stranding is packed with secrets, and Hideo Kojima’s latest game is no exception. With the recent release of Death Stranding: Grounded on PS4, fans are combing the game for every detail, no matter how small. One fan has discovered something gruesome involving antagonist Higgs Monaghan that you might not have seen in your playthrough. If you haven’t finished Grounded, be warned – there are some minor spoilers ahead.

The unexpected consequence of not fighting Higgs Monaghan

In one of the game’s boss fights with antagonist Higgs Monaghan, players are forced to hide from him in order to progress. If you refuse to fight him for a while, however, Higgs will give up and attack Sam instead.

A video posted on Twitter by user ‘Daedric’ shows Higgs tearing a piece of Sam’s ear off, before the protagonist kicks him away. The interaction isn’t something you’d discover naturally, as your natural instinct is to fight back against Higgs – but now we know that, if you refuse, he’ll retaliate.

Screenshots posted by the person who discovered the detail show Sam with a damaged ear for the rest of the game. It’s a pretty gruesome detail, and one that most players probably wouldn’t have seen if they didn’t refuse to fight.

Thankfully, Hideo Kojima himself has seen the video, and retweeted it with the caption “It’s true.” That confirms that the detail is an intentional feature in the game, and that players who refuse to fight Higgs will have to suffer the consequences.

The detail could be a reference to the infamous boxing match between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield in 1997.
