A Deep Rock Galactic Season Pass That Isn’t a Paywall

Deep Rock Galactic’s season pass is a welcome sight in a world where so many others are, and the Fortnite-inspired game’s example could help push other games to make similar changes. While some worry that praising Deep Rock Galactic for its battle pass system is complaining, others remind us that simply not buying season passes won’t solve the problem. Instead, we should be calling it out, and we should shame those who buy them.

Many users praise DRG for not being greedy with its season pass. “Thank you for not doing a season pass,” one user writes. “Every single game has them now, and it’s one of my biggest pet peeves.” Others point out that Deep Rock Galactic does have paid DLCs, but they’re purely cosmetic and don’t lock content behind a paywall.

“They’re just cosmetics, which is fine. I haven’t explored but I’m sure it’s complete cosmetic outfits and weapons,” one user says. “I don’t mind these things, I don’t mind them at all. But it is not okay to lock content behind a paywall. That’s what we’re talking about here.”

“There’s nothing wrong with cosmetics,” another replies. “But when you lock something behind a paywall, it’s gone too far. Especially when you can finish the season and then continue at a later time to receive rewards.”

“Why is it seen as complaining to compliment a game’s battle pass system?” another asks. “Maybe it’s because the people who complain about battle passes are the ones who are complaining about them, so people think we’re complaining about them complaining about battle passes.”

“I agree,” another replies. “But I would phrase it as ‘calling them out for the affront to all that is good and decent’ rather than, ‘I’m going to shame them for their choices.’ Just my personal preference.”

“It’s not wrong to call them out,” one replies. “But it’s also not wrong to understand why they exist. I buy them sometimes and have no qualms with them, but I do agree that they shouldn’t lock content behind them.”

“The thing is, if the battle pass is free, then there should be no reason to lock the content behind it,” another replies. “It’s not a free-to-play game.”

Some users agree that Deep Rock Galactic’s battle pass should be free since it’s not a free-to-play game and it’s not locking content behind a paywall. Mention is made of Halo Infinite and the Master Chief Collection as examples of games with good battle pass systems.

“The Master Chief Collection had a really good battle pass once it got past the initial stage,” one user says. “You could go back and earn rewards in Halo Infinite even after the season pass expired, and it was purely cosmetic.”

“The only thing I hate about the Halo Infinite battle pass is that I have to grind unnecessary tiers to get the ones I want,” another replies. “I don’t enjoy the game, but I have to grind these tiers because they’re the only way to get the rewards I want.”

“I think the fact that I don’t enjoy the game has a lot to do with why I’m frustrated with having to grind these tiers,” the user replies. “It’s not like I’m forced to buy it. I have the choice to do what I want and earn the things I want, but I have to grind through a lot of unnecessary tiers.”

Despite not enjoying the game, this user praises DRG for its free battle pass and the love the creators have for the game. For those wondering whether to try out Deep Rock Galactic, this user says “I don’t recommend it, but if you’re still curious, I’d say go ahead and try it.”
