Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical's Act Three Scene in the Throne of Hades
Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical‘s Act Three scene in the Throne of Hades is a tour de force of emotion, drama, and pure musical bliss. As Grace and Persephone head to Hades to seek the Ruler’s help in communicating with The Fates, the pair find themselves in the midst of a tense and potentially life-altering situation. The two encounter two emotional songs that have significant consequences for the rest of the game, and the player has the chance to bring someone back from the dead if they make a selfless choice.
The Throne of Hades scene begins immediately after Grace discusses Calliope’s attack by The Furies with either Apollo or Persephone. Grace, along with Persephone and Apollo, convince Apollo to take them to Hades. After meeting Hermes, who grants them access to the Underworld, Persephone reveals that Orpheus currently sits on the Throne of Hades, and she aims to dethrone him.
To reach the Throne, players must convince Charon, the ferryman of the dead, to transport them across the River Styx. After a comical song with Charon, Orpheus becomes aware of their presence and initiates a song called “The Throne” where the player’s decisions determine the outcome.
The scene concludes with someone taking control of the Throne of Hades, depending on the player’s choices. The Fates refuse to help and inform the players that sitting on the Throne does not grant the power to revive the dead. Freddie’s spirit enters the room, offering a chance for Grace and Persephone to speak with Calliope’s spirit.
Persephone reveals that Athena orchestrated Calliope’s death, believing a prophecy stating that “The Idols cannot continue so long as the Last Muse lives.” Grace is the Last Muse, and Calliope tried to change the prophecy by contacting The Fates with Pan’s help. The scene ends after the song, returning Grace, Persephone, and potentially Freddie to Grace’s apartment to prepare for the trial.
If the player chooses to speak to Calliope, the scene continues, with Grace offering to bring Calliope back to life. The player has the opportunity to make a selfless choice that can change the course of the game.
The Stray Gods Throne of Hades scene is an excellent example of what the game does best, combining multiple songs with meaningful choices that change the outcome of the game. The emotional weight of the decisions, as well as the potential to revive someone from the dead, makes the Throne of Hades scene a standout example of what Stray Gods is striving to achieve.
If the player chooses the selfless option, the scene ends with the player singing “It’s Time,” bidding farewell to Freddie and Calliope in various ways. The choice made during the song affects the outcomes and potential romance with Freddie.
