A Windows 11 Update Causing Blue Screens of Death on MSI Motherboard-Based PCs

The latest Windows 11 update is causing blue screen of death (BSOD) errors on some MSI motherboard-based PC systems, with Microsoft acknowledging the issue and stopping the problematic update from pushing out to affected machines. The problem seems to be related to MSI Motherboards that have the latest BIOS updates, which were rolled out in preparation for Intel’s upcoming 14th Gen Core processors.

The issue, which is outlined in several Microsoft Answers threads, seems to be related to MSI motherboards that have the ‘PXe3t’ v1.1 BIOS installed. This BIOS update was released recently in order to prepare for Intel’s newest CPUs, and it explicitly states that it supports “next-gen CPUs.” However, it seems that this update may have caught Microsoft’s newest OS off guard, and now some systems are experiencing blue screen errors after installing the update.

“I found this thread and my experience is the same,” one user writes on the Microsoft Answers thread. “I updated my MSI B450M Mortar to the 1.1 BIOS and installed KB5029351 and now I’m getting the unsupported processor blue screen. I’m using an A6-9500.”

Microsoft’s Answers team has responded to the thread, saying, “We have determined this is a software issue,” and advising people to “contact their manufacturer for further support.” However, the company has not yet specified exactly what it believes to be causing the issues.

PC gaming hardware manufacturer MSI has yet to respond to the issue, but it seems that rolling back the problematic MSI BIOS update should resolve the error. It’s also possible to recover Windows and rollback the patch, but that’s a little more complicated.

If you haven’t installed the Windows KB5029351 update yet, it may be worth holding off on installing it.
