The Cities: Skylines 2 map

The Cities: Skylines 2 map is revealed to be roughly five times bigger than the original game, meaning you'll have even more space to create your dream cities in the highly-anticipated sequel. The news comes alongside a new dev diary focusing on the size and features of the maps in Colossal Order's simulation game, which is set to release in October.

In the original Cities: Skylines, the playable area consisted of 25 map tiles, with a total buildable area consisting of 25 tiles, resulting in a total playable area of 92.16km² – roughly the size of Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia.

In contrast, the map in the sequel consists of 441 map tiles, meaning there is a total of 159km² of playable area. That's roughly the size of the island of Niihau, one of the Hawaiian islands, which has a population of approximately 600 (compared to the millions you'll have in Cities: Skylines).

While the comparison between the two games' map sizes is primarily meant to emphasise the significant growth, it does also highlight the flexibility that comes with the increased size. The map tiles in Cities: Skylines 2 do not need to be connected, allowing you to create isolated pocket towns and expand to the edge of the map, just like in the first game.

You can even purchase map tiles all the way to the edge of the map and create new Outside Connections, which were only possible if the first tile in a new direction was empty in the original game. The map height limit is also higher, giving you greater flexibility in city design.

Of course, this increased map size will not limit modders, who are expected to expand the buildable area even further, as they did in the original game. Developer Colossal Order continues to release new videos and dev diaries leading up to the game's release in October, building excitement among fans of the city-building genre.
