Stoic, the team behind The Banner Saga, has been working on a new fantasy game called Towerborne, which looks like a mix between the strategy game and FotK.

In the wake of The Banner Saga 3 and its excellent Road to fluht, we now have news of another ambitious fantasy game to keep an eye on. That’s right, Towerborne is the new title being developed by Stoic, the team behind the first two games in The Banner Saga trilogy and indie favourite For the King. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s just another nod to The Banner Saga.
Towerborne is a co-op party-based adventure, just like For the King. However, instead of taking place on a hex-based overworld, Towerborne will have a planning system akin to The Banner Saga’s titular banners. During this phase, you’ll be able to plan your adventures out, deciding on a route and which verdant and colourful fields, forests, and caves you’ll explore.
During these exploratory sections, you’ll be able to chat with your group, similar to BFG’s Bitefight Mode for The Banner Saga 2. During these chats, you’ll be able to form relationships with the members of your party, with the game pushing you toward romantic engagements. That’s right, Towerborne is full of flagrant hangs.
After you’ve picked your route and planned your adventures, you’ll switch to an isometric, side-scrolling combat view. During these fights, you can use a range of different abilities and special attacks with your party of up to four players. You’ll be able to take on a range of monsters, from goblins to wolves and beyond – even some mushroom men.
You’ll be able to pick from a range of classes too, with a hammer-wielding warrior and a mage with a flamethrowing staff among those shown so far. Both of these classes popped up in For the King, albeit very different in that game.
It’s a neat spin on the party RPG formula, making Towerborne feel unique in a genre that already includes The Banner Saga and For the King. If you’re a fan of Stoic’s unique art style and unique combat, then you can sign up for the closed beta here. Otherwise, Towerborne actually has a release date already set in 2024, so keep your eyes peeled. You can find out more via the official website.
