Mortal Kombat 1's Story Director Reveals Kuai Liang as Scorpion
Mortal Kombat 1’s story director confirms that Kuai Liang is Scorpion in the new timeline. While many central characters in the fighting game have different identities and backgrounds compared to previous versions, Scorpion has undergone the most significant changes, now being portrayed as the brother of Sub-Zero in the same clan. While some fans have speculated that Scorpion in this new timeline is Kuai Liang and not Hanzo Hazashi, NetherRealm has been trying to hide Scorpion’s name in character bios, fueling speculation.
In an interview with Game’s story director, Dominic Cianciolo, at San Diego Comic-Con, Cianciolo mentions Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s relationship multiple times, then explicitly name-drops Kuai Liang as Scorpion.
“Sub-Zero and Scorpion have this relationship,” Cianciolo says. “Smoke is kind of a cause of tension between the two of them, and that just deepens their brotherly dynamic.”
However, Cianciolo’s accidental reveal may have been unintentional, as the confirmation comes in the midst of a discussion about the game’s central story and character relationships.
Mortal Kombat 1’s changes to character identities and relationships have been trending lately, with the recent reveal that Kollector is actually Kotal Kahn in the new timeline.
