Mortal Kombat 1’s main villain is Shang Tsung, and some fans are surprisingly okay with that. With so many possibilities for an exciting new baddie to take on the likes of Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Johnny Cage, some fans are hoping for a different main antagonist in the fighting game, while others are all for Shang Tsung’s return.

We already know Shang Tsung is the main villain in Mortal Kombat 1’s story, but that didn’t stop fans from speculating who the big bad might be. However, many fans are excited to see the villainous sorcerer return, and some even share ideas for a twist.

“I hope [Shang Tsung] is the main villain,” one Reddit user comments on a post discussing Shang Tsung as the main antagonist. “That would be so dope. No surprise reveals, just a consistent villain the entire game.”

“I love Shang being the main villain,” another replies. “No real villain this time, but Shang is just so perfect for it. I’d be okay with a Timekeeper vs Timekeeper final showdown.”

Other fans, however, are not on board with Shang Tsung returning as the main antagonist.

“I don’t want Shang to be the main villain,” one fan writes. “I want to see other characters take the spotlight.”

“I’m disappointed if Shang is the main antagonist,” another replies. “Would diminish the anticipation surrounding the big bad villain reveal.”

We’re just a few weeks away from the launch of Mortal Kombat 1, and the game’s story remains largely under wraps. Pre-launch trailers have focused on the differences in the timeline and the mixing up of the lore, but nothing specific to the story itself.

We do know that Mileena is portrayed as the heir to the throne in Edenia, with a deadly disease that gives her Tarkatan fangs. The game’s storyline involving Edenia and the royal family is still unclear, though.

We also know a lot about the game’s fatalities, which are sure to shock and disgust even the most seasoned MK players. While the game’s release is eagerly anticipated by fans, it remains to be seen just how Shang Tsung’s role as the main villain unfolds.

However, it looks like Shang Tsung will have a big role to play in MK1, as his ending in Mortal Kombat 11 has him travelling through multiple timelines. Perhaps this will tie into the game’s storyline, and we will see a new angle to Shang Tsung’s character, possibly tied to Liu Kang’s attempts to create the perfect timeline.

In any case, we at least know one thing for certain – Shang Tsung is in for the long haul, and he’s not going anywhere.
