Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto says he is “proud and humbled” by the positive early reaction to the DC Movie, and hopes audiences will see it as just the first in a saga. J.M. DeMatteis, Geoff Johns, and Blue Beetle creator Dan Garrett all chime in as well to share their excitement for the DC film.

“It’s been an incredible experience to be a part of this project,” Soto says of Blue Beetle. “We’re so proud of the film we made, and we’re humbled by the early reaction from fans and critics alike.”

Soto also talks about working with Dan Garrett, who is Jaime Reyes’ creator and gave Soto his blessing to make the movie. “I felt like a kid again,” Soto says of Garrett, “as he was so happy to see one of his creations come to life.”

Soto also says he hopes audiences will see this film as the first of many in a saga, and that they can enjoy the experience of a fun, family-oriented superhero movie. He also adds that the crew is grateful to the passionate fans, who they call the Blue Beetle Battalion, and that they have shown “overwhelming support” for the film.

Blue Beetle also marks the first time I’ve been exposed to the Injustice video game, and I have to say it’s very impressive. Among the more impressive fighting sequences is one where Reyes fights a giant scorpion creature made of stone, in a sequence that is reminiscent of Final Fantasy 7’s Buster Sword and the Injustice game.

Soto also mentions how he drew inspiration from a wide variety of video games, including Nintendo’s Power Glove, as well as Final Fantasy 7’s Buster Sword and Scorpion’s catchphrase. Soto also talks about the overwhelming support from the Blue Beetle Battalion, a group of fans who are passionate about the character.

“The Blue Beetle Battalion has been beyond supportive since the announcement of the movie,” the director says. “And the kind of support they showed us has been incredible.”

Blue Beetle stars Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Ben Rahrig, and Dalton Sim as Jaime Reyes’ friends Paco, Tia, and Brenda respectively. The film also stars Ava Acres as the villainous Lorelei, with Aimee Teegarden as Rebecca Reyes, and Michael Beach as the heroic agent Dan Garret.
