Mortal Kombat 1 Character Reveal at San Diego Comic-Con

Mortal Kombat 1 will reportedly have a character reveal at San Diego Comic-Con, and fans are speculating that the beloved Ashrah may be making her long-awaited return to the fighting game franchise. While new character reveals just over a week ago seem to have put the potential roster at 17, more seem imminent.

Ed Boon previously announced that Mortal Kombat 1 would be showcased at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21, and the official synopsis for the panel provides some hints as to what we can expect.

“Get ready for the action-packed panel at San Diego Comic-Con! We’ll be pulling back the veil on the upcoming Mortal Kombat game, and revealing the first playable character!” the synopsis reads. “You won’t want to miss this exclusive look at one of the biggest video game releases of the year!”

The panel includes Ed Boon, Dominic Cianciolo, Thiago Gomes, and actors Vincent Rodriguez III and Kelly Hu. While it’s always possible that Rodriguez or Hu could be the mystery character, the mention of Kelly Hu serves as a significant clue.

Not only has Hu previously been involved in Mortal Kombat projects (she voiced D’Vorah in previous games and Sindel in Mortal Kombat X), but the fact that she’s listed alongside Rodriguez serves as a potential hint.

Why? Well, there’s a good chance that Hu is playing Ashrah in the upcoming animated film Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match. The film is set to hit theaters in October and features a voice cast that includes many notable actors, such as Tom Hardy and Tatuya Schnee.

Since she’s playing Ashrah in the animated movie, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that she could also voice the character in MK1. It would be quite the treat for fans of the 3D era to see Ashrah on the roster after she hasn’t been on since Mortal Kombat 9.

We’ll find out for sure during the panel at Comic-Con, but it does seem that there’s a strong chance that Ashrah is the character in question. Regardless of if she’s the reveal, it’s still exciting to hear that she’s a part of the game.

Ed Boon has previously hinted that the 3D era will play a significant role in MK1, so it would be in line with that to feature a character from those games. If you ask me, I’d love to see Kabal make a return as well, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Mortal Kombat 1 is set to release in late 2021. Stay tuned for more updates and surprises from the world of the MK.
