Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon recently expressed his interest in a potential collaboration between the Super Smash Bros. roster and the renowned fighting game series. In an interview with Axios, Boon mentioned that although Nintendo has not approached him about such a crossover, he is open to the idea. He believes that characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero, with their iconic designs and signature moves, would make fantastic additions to the Super Smash Bros. lineup.
Boon specifically highlighted Scorpion's famous "get over here!" move as a move he would love to include in the game. While acknowledging the need to adapt the characters to fit the family-friendly nature of Super Smash Bros., Boon pointed out that other mature-oriented characters like Snake and Bayonetta have successfully transitioned into the game.
"I think that would be great," Boon expressed when asked about the potential crossover. "I don't know if it's ever been suggested before, but I think it would be cool if they did something like that. I don't know if they'd ever do it, but it'd be awesome."
Boon further touched on the peculiar nature of Mortal Kombat having a Saturday morning cartoon in the 1990s, despite the mature content of the games. He stated that while the Mortal Kombat characters might require some toning down for Super Smash Bros., he believes that Nintendo may have a soft spot for the series.
"I don't know if Nintendo's ever approached the Mortal Kombat team, but I would think they would have a soft spot for the series," Boon said. "I think they would maybe have to tone them down a little bit for Smash Bros., but I think it would be great."
Boon also mentioned that Mortal Kombat has toned down its violence before, as seen in the crossover game Mortal Kombat vs. DC. He highlighted the fact that other mature-oriented characters, like Snake and Bayonetta, have successfully made their way into Super Smash Bros. "Nintendo's kind of cool like that," he added.
